I am British and have lived in this country for 56 years. I was, however, born in Germany and spent my childhood and war years there. A vivid memory I have is of the choir at my school. I desperately wanted to join, but could not sing. There was to be a great concert in the town hall and a lot of schools sent their choir. On the night of the concert there was a terrible air raid and everyone was killed. There was worst to come — that was what I remember most. Even then I could see how futile war is and that mainly ordinary people on both side get killed and hurt. Leaders should do a lot more to find peaceful solutions.
