At the beginning of the war my father, John Orchard, found himself in a Protected job working for London Transport. So he spent much of his time with the Home Guard and as an Air Raid Warden.
Of the few stories he told of that time, he recalled how in joy on VE Day he rang a hand bell from the Air Raid Wardens’ Hut all day long until it seemed his arm would drop off.
