In 1941 or 1942 when I was about eight years old, I remember coming home from school and seeing little white clouds puffing in the sky. Then I saw a couple of planes. Only then did I realise there was a dogfight going on high in the sky above me.
My father — Hugh — was a Lt Colonel in the Royal Artillery. He was in charge of the battery at Inchkeith, and it was this position that brought down the first German plane over Edinburgh.
