My Father was a Lieutenant in the Home Guard and, as such was issued with a Sten Gun. With it he had two rounds of ammunition.
Immediately after the end of the war he was instructed to hand back his armament and decided to show off by firing his two rounds.
We had an Anderson shelter in the garden which was about 15 yards away from the back steps to the house. Dad carefully placed the chopping block in front of the mound of the shelter, sat down on the step and myself, my brothers and cousins all gathered round for the exiting event!
Dad loaded the first round and fired at the chopping block - and missed. He then loaded the second round, fired and missed again!
That was it! The firing was over, the war was over and thank God he never had to use his sten gun and two rounds in anger!
