This is about my friend francis Nicholson of Fleetwood Lancashire who sadly departed from us around Five years ago.I knew Frank during the last ten years of his life and he told me about his experiences during the second world war!
He told me that he was part of the British expeditionary force with his mates from a local regiment from the North west of England. He said that he and his mates had been part of a rearguard action against an SS position coming towards Dunkirk. He said that they had laid a wire accross the road to intercept a motorcycle convoy approaching, down a road. They incapacitated the lead motorcycle and opened fire with Bren gun and rifles killing 6 nazis.
They then fled from their action only to be intercepted by more enemy SS.They were unfortuneately rouded up and taken to a coal mine in Silesia where they were eventually liberated some 4 years later by the Russians.
Frank spoke of terrible working conditions under his imprisonment and possibly being poisoned by their SS guards, with stuff added to their meagre food rations.
Despite his frail appearance and personal problems in life,Frank was largely uncomplaining about his wartime experiences and I helped him in his later years, together with the British legion to get some compensation for a watime injury to his leg.He lived until his early eighties and Im sure he would approved of this eulogy to his wartime contribution to helping keep Europe free from tyranny.
god bless frank and all your mates!
