My Childhood Memories of the War. By Joan Pearce.

I was four years old when war broke out. The things I remember most were the air raids when we had to go into the shelters. We had one in our garden, and there was one for those who didn't have their own, where we went sometimes. I always had to sleep on the top bunk. They smelt very damp.
I remember asking my mother about the planes we could hear overhead, and she would reassure me by saying "It's one of ours".
I remember the doodle bugs and especially the ones when the engine stopped, you knew they were going to drop to the ground.
