When I was a sergeant, I had to look after a young officer, called Duncan-Smith, who had married a man from Malta and contracted dysentery. When she was getting better, the M.O. (medical officer) said to me that a rice pudding would be good for her, and he added, “Just drop an egg into it, which will help to build her strength up.”
I followed the instructions to the letter, made the pudding, added the egg, and popped it into the oven. Imagine her surprise when she went to take a spoonful, and found a hard-boiled egg in the middle of it! The story soon spread, unlike the egg, and I never lived it down!
