My Grandfather was a member of the Home Guard in Largs on the Ayrshire coast. One night along with two others they were on lookout on the sea front at Largs, when out of the mist appeared a large number of ships. They all thought it must be a German invasion and wondered what to do. At that time they only had one bullet between the three of them so they decided the best plan was retreat and raise the alarm. What they did not know was the ships were the armada leaving the Clyde to join the other ships at Dunkirk.
