At the age of 11 I remember the 17th March 1945, as US Tanks rolled into and through the village where we had been evacuated. Like a never ceasing river of tanks and lorries passed through the village, without seeing any German Soldier. I still sense the smell of petrol, while the cars we had known were driven with wood (Holzvergaser!) The tanks and lorries rumbled on for three days. Now they were protected by footsoldiers on the left and right sides. Not one shot was fired in all those three days. Only the never ceasing noise of heavy engines of trucks and tanks, occasionally a plane passing at a low hight, filled those days.
