My father was killed in action in Flushing in the Netherlands on 1 November 1944. I was born shortly after his death. He had been with No4 Commando from the early days of the war through Lofoton, Dieppe, D-Day and then Flushing. He was initially buried in Biervielt, Netherlands and now rests at Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetry, Netherlands.
My son Iain and I remembered my father and all of his comrades in No4 and No10 1A Inter Allied Commando when we were over at Flushing and Bergen-op-Zoom in November 2004. Thanks to the Dutch people who remember the liberators who did not return home.
We will never forget and go each year as a family to Spean Bridge to remember the Commandos who gave there life so we could live in freedom.
My mother Margaret died in 2003 and we laid the Commano wreaths on her coffin at my Fathers grave.
