This is the service history for my Mother-in-Law Emma, known as Emmie to her friends in Hull. Born in 1910 on 23rd July and actually entertained the troops at five years old, in the first war, at concerts for the troops in Hull, of course. But the second war saw this young mother of a 2 year old daughter doing her service on the Home Front. Emma volunteered for the ARP, later to become the Civil Defense, and was also a member of the National Fire Service and not content with these two demanding jobs served in the Hull canteen for the American Red Cross with over 500 hrs of duty!
She has a wealth of stories from these times, mainly of a humorous nature because that is the way that adversity was overcome, with a smile and a laugh (sometimes false) but not letting the situation grind them down.
As she says she was probably the only person on the "Stand Down" parade to have been wearing her Leading Firewoman's uniform beneath an ARP greatcoat......there will be more anecdotes later.
