My family were bombed out of Bristol and my father -a vicar - was relocated to Bath. Unfortunately they arrived just in time for the infamous Baedecker raids. Our house was severly damaged and there was no water, gas or electricity.
However my father being an old soldier from WWI and 'of the cloth' felt keeping up appearences was important for morale. So he shaved using his own spit and polished his shoes likewise. On arriving at the reception centre for vitims of the raid he overheard someone remark - "typical of a ----- priest to have hot water when the rest of us have none". He was not amused.
