One day we saw an aircraft coming over us. A neighbour said ‘look out — here she comes’ and one bomb dropped outside our house in Chestnut Ave. We all dashed into the cellar. The bomb exploded and a house opposite had to be demolished. Our own house was picked up and put down in the explosion. This was our first taste of war.

I remember Stifford Clays being developed. There were shops in little huts and we got our rations there.

I remember the ‘Avenues’ (Chestnut etc) — Canadian troops were stationed there pre-invasion. The locals invited them in for a bath and some even kept in touch after the war.
