I was 15 ½ when I started in the canteen in H.M. Dockyard which had just been taken over from dockyard workmen often working from 7 am to 10 pm. I was involved in feeding them lunches, teas and in the evenings feed the firewatchers. During Wednesday’s lunchtime there was entertainment of workers playtime.
My father and sister were both wardens making sure the windows were blacked out and helping people to the shelter, which we used in the park behind the house. On one occasion my youngest sister was in the bath when the siren went, she didn’t stop to dry or put clothes on and ran out the door to the shelter.
