I was a small child living in Durrington in Wiltshire during the War, in a tiny one up and one down cottage. One night I was in bed with my Mum when I said to her “There’s someone coming through the window”. She said “Don’t be silly.” and I said “Yes — they’ve just knocked your pot over!” I said “Listen — they’re coming up the stairs” and she said “Who’s that?” and the reply was “Who the bloody hell do you think it is!” It was my father and he had to go and report to the police station the next morning — I think it must have been him returning from Dunkirk.
