Remember Chad? Remember, wot no sweets?
What treats did we find instead?
Five of us, a ha’penny each,
Tearing delicious tuppence ha’penny new baked bread.
Or a ha’porth of fades, squishy pears,
Plums squirting rich red juice, bruised apples.
Cherries hung over the ears in pairs.
And, if you bought a carrot going to school,
You’d scrape it along the wall to shed its peel.
More juice! Then blackberries, and hazel nuts,
And chestnuts roasted on the fire,
And crisp garden-grown peas, popped from the pod.
And the slowly savoured tang on the tongue
Of licking a penny Oxo cube,
Making it last, all the way home.
