My father was in a reserved occupation, his job was a train fireman/driver. He recalls that the majority of "goods" were tranported at night. I wonder how many people realise that in order to refuel the train engines with coal, firemen had to try to act as quickly as possible when travelling through tunnels as the bright light of the fire would attract enemy aircraft! He says it was absolutely exhausting!
One particular night as he was travelling to London, they looked up and there closely following them was a German plane. "Thats it" they thought, "We've had it". but luck was with them that night, the plane just followed for a few miles then flew off.
My father thinks maybe it was on a spying mission and was using rail lines as a guide to cities....... Who Knows? It was certainly a night to remember.
