My mother bred dachshunds; we had a dog and two bitches. They all had long pedigrees and kennel names but she called the large black dog Adolf (that's right, Adolf). The red bitch was Gretel and the black and tan bitch was Gertrude. Little wonder then that as she walked them on their triple lead calling "Come along Adolf, keep up Gertie", etc that people kicked and spat at the poor, innocent animals. I think now that my parents probably enjoyed the power they had over Adolf and co. through the war years.
