My late father told me of an incident which happened during the London Blitz. When he was called to attend a client’s premises that had been bombed, to open the safe, since he was the key holder. The company was dealing in Black Market clothing coupons, and had amassed about £30,000 in cash. When the safe was opened the heat had been so intense the illicitly stashed money had been reduced to charred ash!!
