I have just finished watching the BBC's series about Dunkirk, and would like to mention what happened to my Great-Grandfather, a member of the Merchant Navy, who I am named after.
He was the Chief Engineer of the SS Lorina, which was a ship which went to Dunkirk to help to rescue the soldiers who were trying to evacuate France.

The ship he was working on was bombed by the Luftwaffe on May 29th, at Dunkirk. I never got to meet him, but the fact that all these people, in all types of ships and boats, crossed the channel to try to rescue our boys was illustrated by his actions, as he was a crewman on a civilian ship.
I always wanted to know if, when his ship was lost, it had already picked up a load of soldiers, or if it had just arrived. Probably better if it were the latter, I always thought.
