Roy and Terry (in wellies)

Clarence’s Wedding

Mother took us to Uncle Clarence’s wedding, we were dressed very smart with the exception of our young Terry, being a jack the lad he had kicked the toe end out of his new boots. There was only one thing to do — and that was to take him to the wedding in his Wellingtons, it was April and bright with sunlight. My Uncle Mark commented “What the hell have you brought him in wellingtons for and what have you brought that mardy beggar for?” he grumbled as usual, meaning me. I had taken his gibes for long enough, I had to come out of my shell at some time and I retaliated with the words “who’s a fat little pig then, fat little pig” hearing that made his gold teeth chatter. “I’ll kill him our Gweny, listen to him and what he’s calling me”. My Auntie Reany came to my rescue and told him he’d asked for it and that it served him right. I could not resist one more “who’s a little fat pig then”, then Reany and Mother told me to cut it out. They had enough money, they could have gone and bought Terry a new pair of boots it would have saved all the hassle, still it must have entertained the guests at the reception.

Wilfred’s Wedding

My grandma sent an invitation to my mother and only the two girls to attend, Terry and I were not invited to his wedding. I was 8 and Terry was 7 years old, my mother was livid and wrote a scathing letter and instructed her to wipe her backside on it when she had finished reading it. Mother got us dressed in our best togs and off we went to the night time celebration. My dad’s sisters kids were all invited to the wedding, people at the wedding couldn’t believe that my grandma had rejected Terry and I, oh to be a war widow’s son!
