My father was @ Dunkirk, but he never spoke about it till one night in Sydney we were looking @ a BBC doco re WW11, there was footage of troops embarking @ Southampton and he came to life: the man on the plank was Wintergreen. My father was a staff sergeant, Wintergreen outranked him. They were two of a party of soldiers heading for Dunkirk in the dark with no orders, no commanding officer, no map, basically on the run and heading for the beach. They came to a crossroads. A dispute broke. Wintergreen wanted to go left, my father wanted to go right. There was no logic here, it was a bet you took. They agreed to disagree. The troop split more or less 50/50. My Dad made it to the beach, made it to a fishing boat, a bomb hit the boat, but he was rescued. Wintergreen and co? Never seen again.
