My wife to be was born and lived in Milan. the flat was bombed and family temporarily move to the country. She was knocked down by a German lorry but survived. She saw Mussolini and mistress strung up before the Cardinal of Milan had orderedd their removal (she lived in the adjacent piazza). My father-in-law to be held the same view of Mussolini as Churchill. He was great admirer of Churchill and this country for standing up to the Nazis alone and against impossible odds. He followed the news on BBC Londra, to the worry of my mother in law as this was a punishable offence. Uncle Goffredo was sent to Russia in the army, where he drove a lorry. He regarded his chances of survival as small so he diserted with the lorry and a load of diserters and managed to drive back to Milan where he disappeared until after the war. After the war she met a teaching colleague of mine (DFC) who had bombed Milan.
