The details I have are sketchy, and I would love to know more. All I know was that my grandfather was on leave from the merchant navy, when a call went out for help with a lifeboat, which my Grandad answered.
He went out to the stricken ship, all but one man was rescued, who I understand was the cheif engineer. The lifeboat captain asked for two volunteers to board the boat to rescue him; my grandfather went aboard. The cheif engineer survived, but my grandfather went down with the ship.
If this story sounds familiar and you can provide more detail, I would love to hear from you.
