One could say this sounds like a fable
But once upon a time - I met Clarke Gable
Star of Hollywood's Silver Screen
Star struck I know - but I was only sixteen
We girls got together — as all young girls would
When we heard he was visiting ‘Burtonwood’
Vaseline’d our eyes — tanned our legs like you’d never seen
Well as I say — we were only sixteen
The journey by train steamed mile after mile
We reckoned that way we travelled in style
Then walked country lanes and fields so green
Chattering like — birds when you’re only sixteen
Such excitement when he came into view
Tall and handsome this idol we knew
We acted like we were all part of a scene
I’m sure he knew we were only sixteen
“Hi girls” he said — his voice rich and deep
His ‘odol’ smile caressed his cheek
With a uniform that fitted just like a dream
What could we say — hey — we were only sixteen
Nowadays as I drive down the motorway
Cut through those fields that were there that day
I smile a little ‘cos I’m given to dream
About the day I met Clarke Gable — when I was only sixteen.
