We lived in a new house in a small surrey suburb when the war was first declared. I thought that there would be an air raid or gas attack almost immediately, so I started to shout out the kitchen window for my husband to come in from the garden. He had been outside for ages, planting nearly a hundred curly kale plants. He wasn't having any of it though, he just refused outright and shouted back that he wasn't coming in until he had finished his planting.
