A total of approximately 50 V1 flying bombs [doodle bugs]were launched on December 24th,1944,aimed at Manchester. To enable them to reach this far they were each slung under the wing of a Heinkel 111 bomber and air launched over the North Sea.
I can still remember the noise one made passing over Woodley in the early hours of that Christmas Eve morning to explode in a suburb of Hyde nearby.
Some exploded in fields around Cheshire and some unfortunately caused casualties. Happily some were shot down by East coast Ack Ack batteries.
An excellent paperback is still available describing the whole episode, entitled:-
Flying bombs over the Pennines.
It is a truly cracking read by Peter J C Smith.
