When war started, we went on school two or three days a week in the mornings in different people’s houses. So we missed a lot of education in that sense. And then during the war, when the Blitz started, we used to go down to the… shelter and spent the night down there and I used to get up in the morning at 7.30am to start work, and we finished about 5 p.m. And that was it. We used to go on to night’s school three nights a week in those days as an apprentice
But I can’t really remember much of that except the fact that once or twice I stayed in bed and my mother said to me “you’re getting up?” and I said “No, I’m too tired to get up I’m staying in bed.” And I’d get up in the morning.
