On 10th May 1940 i was wakened by the sound of the Luftwaffe over Antwerp where i lived.My father was a sales Distribution Manager for a british company Butchers Film Service and his territory was Belgium. He spoke fluent flemish and fench was a british subject but was treated by his peers as a belgin national . My father believed that Belgium would remain neutral if there was going to be a war and therefore stayed in Belgium whilst other british nationals let to go to England in September 1939.
My father decide to go to Ostend to get a boat for England with the family including his father Stepmother step brothers and step aunt. As the public transport was commandeered by the Belgian army the only hope was to go by Taxi.
My uncle was friendly with the proprietor of the local taxi firm and he went to see them to find out the availbility of of taxis
