When you were in the mud, that’s where the leeches were — in there, and they’d get through your shoes and on your legs and suck your blood.
I had some nasty encounters with them, we all did up there - there wasn’t much you could do to stop them. Some of them were very big, massive things. There was only one way you could get rid of them — that was to touch them with a lighted cigarette and they’d drop off. If you brushed them off their suckers would stay in and they’d fester, and you’d have a sore there.
I remember the red ants as well — great big things and they’d drop off things on to you!
