During the war, my father, who was in the navy, didn’t like my mother to see him off at North Road Railway Station. However, towards the end of 1944, Mother got her own way and took me (then aged about 4 ½ years) to see him off at the station. There were lots of womenfolk there, naturally, all of them were practising “stiff upper-lipism”.
As the train pulled out I yelled in that small boy’s voice that carries for ¾ mile on a good day “I’ve got no daddy now!”
End of British resolve. The collective hours of dismay were something to behold.
