I was eight years old, living in Sheffield. Later my Dad went in the army. He was stationed at Egham in Surrey. My Mum and I went to Clapham to stay with my relations. My Dad was posted to India; I went to a deaf school as a border run by the LCC (then, London County Council) in Anally near Crystal Palace. I saw a lot of V1’s and V2’s, some landed near my school. I used to visit Kemble Airfield where spitfires took off for Germany. Only later did I realise how young the pilots were.
I was then evacuated to South Wales to live with my family.
When Dad was demobbed we returned to Sheffield where Dad worked at the Telegraph and Star.
