During and immediately after the evacuation from Dunkirk when we fully expected the German army and airforce to 'follow-through' with the invasion of England, every measure was taken to improve the immediate defences. Block houses were built across the countryside and manned night and day by regular forces. London taxicabs were also commandeered, Lewis machine guns mounted on their roofs and regular patrols made along the coast roads, luckily with no encounters but the effect on the moral of the general public probably made it worthwhile.
