During the war the American army were stationed in the town of Bampton Devon, working on our farm at Druids hayne Bampton was Beatrice Maidment, a young woman from Chegford, she helped with the cows and the stock and the peas and cauliflowers etc.Beatrice got friendly with an American soldier from Bampton , only a mile from the farm. Beatrice was like family to us , she had no parents of her own and when she and the American decided to get married, she wore my wifes wedding dress, and I had the honour of giving her away when they were married in Bampton church. The American Army supplied all the food for the reception which was held at the farm , of couresthere was plenty of everything , tinned friut and even whisky.
