My Father served in the First World War and had remained very active in the British Legion. In 1938 the call went out for volunteers to go and police Cekoslowakia, my Father voilunteered straight away. He was issued with a very smart uniform which he showed us with great pride. He had his embarkation leave and then off he went on board ship and on his way. Meanwhile, Chamberlain cam back brandishing his slip of paper and they were disbanded 3 days out of harbour and returned home. He carried on in the Home Guard.
