During the early years of the war, my uncle, Roy Elliott, died in the Vatican city. We know from letters and from newspaper articles at the time, that his submarine, the Saracen, was torpedoed off the coast of Italy, and damaged so that all crew had to make their escape. The details of how he made his escape from the submarine and subsequently to Rome and into the Vatican city, we do know. What we do know is that he suffered from nightmares and sleepwalking, presumably as a result of the escape. He met his death by climbing out of an upstairs bedroom window in the middle of the night, and falling to the street below, breaking his neck. It would be very interesting to know the details of the attack on the Saracen, how the crew escaped, and how they managed to reach the Vatican.
