My father was in the merchant navy most of his working life and served on troup carriers during the second world war. One story he used to tell us was when he was serving on the Viceroy of India. It was torpedoed, luckily when empty of troups and sank. As far as I know there was only a couple of people killed and my father returned home to my mother with nothing but the clothes he stood up in. He also used to man a gun onboard and consequently was a little hard of hearing most of his life.

My aunt served in the Wrens during the war at Portsmouth where she was one of those people who pushed boats etc around on the boards. By all accounts despite the war she managed to enjoy herself!
