The Olympic competitions, held at Earls Court, were dominated by the male teams from Finland and Switzerland, including the veteran Finn, Heikki Savolainen. In his fourth Olympics and over 40 years old, he won a gold medal on the pommel horse.
At the following Games, in 1952, the entry of the Soviet Union changed the face of international gymnastics for ever.
