Westminster Abbey, Edward the Confessor's tomb
More than 900 years ago Westminster Abbey was a Benedictine monastery, but the Abbey as we know it today took shape between the 13th and 16th centuries. Every monarch of England (later Britain) since William the Conqueror, with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII, has been crowned here.
In 1965-6, the Abbey celebrated its 900th anniversary. The image above shows the tomb of Edward the Confessor. The shrine was partially restored during the reign of Mary I.
