Hexham Abbey, Northumberland
Founded by St Wilfrid in AD 674, the original church at Hexham was constructed from stones taken from Hadrian's Wall. All that remains of the original building is the crypt.
Much of the present Hexham Abbey dates to the 12th century. It is known for several important historical artefacts, including Saint Wilfrid's chair, which was reputedly used as the coronation seat for the kings of Northumbria, and the 'Midnight Stair', used by the canon to reach his dormitory.
