Wheel-throwing techniques were not introduced into Britain until the end of the Iron Age. Until the first century BC, British pots were hand-made by coil- or slab-shaping.
Clay was mixed with 'temper' such as sand or crushed pottery, which reduced shrinkage and cracking on drying.
Firing was done under a bonfire or in a shallow pit. The colour of the finished pot could be controlled by varying the amount of oxygen in the firing.
