CD review by Toxic Pete

Bruno Gallone Demo

Pete Brown, AKA Toxic Pete, is an international music reviewer based in Worcester. He's regularly approached by major record labels to comment on their latest releases. Read his views on one local CD...

Bruno Gallone's two track demo is a piece of quintessentially British pop that borders on clichéd retro. It's catchy, inoffensive and sing-along-able. 'Down To You' and 'The Best Thing' bring The Housemartins and Billy Bragg to mind.

Bruno Gallone

Although Bruno sells himself as power-pop, I can't help but feel that there's a bit to go yet before the prefix fits the style. Gallone's well enunciated vocals and fluid delivery are on the softer side of the genre at the moment - Gallone needs a little more balls in his delivery to qualify for use of that prefix to his pop. Although Gallone quite obviously feels his music - and delivers it with a reasonable degree of confidence - I think he needs to let go of a few inhibitions and let it all rip occasionally. Then Bruno Gallone will take things to another level and start to stand out from the crowd.

"With a bit of well proportioned zip and boldly arrogant pzazz in his work I think Gallone would get more mileage from his songs and open up more doors"

Toxic Pete

Bruno Gallone's voice is smooth rather than gritty and his style is polite rather than forceful - the two songs offered here are pleasant enough pieces and Gallone gets the job done perfectly adequately. But, again I feel that his writing style is also just too politely acceptable - Gallone doesn't take any chances, doesn't push at the language. The result is that Gallone tends to be a bit safe, guarded, almost naive sounding, rather than letting go and taking a few risks both lyrically and musically. Gallone's writing could certainly benefit from the inclusion of some street talk. His acoustic guitar style is comfortably numb rather than forcefully animated - just a bit more aggression towards the strings might just make a difference here - make 'em ring, make 'em talk!

Bruno Gallone has been around on the music scene for quite a while now. His previous existences tended to be within the environs of a band. As a solo artist Gallone is much more exposed and vulnerable and he needs to get fired up and give off a bit of attitude. So, as a demo, this is perfectly acceptable - but not amazing. With a bit of well proportioned zip and boldly arrogant pzazz in his work I think Gallone would get more mileage from his songs and open up more doors.

You can listen to all of the latest music from across the two counties on the Friday Session Introducing... every week from 7pm, on BBC Hereford & Worcester.
