Mary Fox

Youth Club Classics is on BBC Hereford and Worcester each Saturday from 6pm. Mary Fox plays upbeat, classic motown tracks with a mix of mod pop, blue-eyed soul and the odd rarity spanning three decades.

A trip to the youth club was more than a frothy coffee on a Wednesday night or a game of table tennis – it was THE place to break a new record, or to share the joy of a new sound and to practice some smart moves.

From the early sixties right through to the eighties, generations of teenagers enjoyed the group experience of listening together.

Today's iPOD is a wonderful invention but some might say it's robbed today's teenagers of that wonderful bonding that came with proudly placing a record, with its brand new just off the shelf smell, onto a record player and watching the dawn of delight on your friends faces.

Not all youth club classics were rarities, much of the early material came from the Motown catalogue, American artists, blue eyed soul, mod pop and there was always room for the unusual and the instrumental.

Youth Club Classics offers upbeat classic tracks spanning several decades to celebrate our youth.

What was it about being a teenager that was so special?

Eternal optimism tinged with apprehension, but always grounded in a joy of being alive, young and even if life could be lousy, it was going to get better.

The music backed up all our hopes and dreams – from being married to a rich partner or driving the best car, to being surrounded by lots of children in a show-house home, with wall-to-wall carpeting and two tellies(!) or maybe running the country, a company, or playing in a first division football team.
