Flood Hero: Emergency Centre

Steve, who lives in Malvern, had just dropped his brother-in-law off at Heathrow. But little did he know he'd be stopping the night in an Emergency Centre...

I'd like to nominate the team who ran the Emergency Centre in the Tewkesbury Borough Council Offices on Friday night.

I was heading home, after dropping off my brother-in-law at Heathrow, and managed to fight my way back to Cheltenham. But when I was about to go down the M5, I saw the 'car park' as far as the eye could see! So I decided to try and get through Tewkesbury - and failed!

I turned around and told there as no option but to go to the centre. After a stuttering start, where we had a massive queue of people having to queue to register, they did a great job, feeding us, and providing hot drinks all night!

The volunteers were great, the sense of humour was scary in the circumstances, and the 160-or-so others, who were staying there, were great! Whilst an experience I would have liked to avoid, it was an experience not to be missed... if you get my drift! Thank you very much to everyone who made it as comfortable as it could be!

I made it home to my house, near Malvern, after dropping off my parents-in-law in Leigh at about 5pm on Saturday, having left the centre in Tewkesbury at about 7am! 10 hours to do the fifteen miles or so... great fun!
