Flood Hero: Taxi Driver

A taxi driver in Hereford who literally went the extra mile.

I thought I was going to be marooned at Hereford railway station on Friday afternoon, with my two children aged three and 12.

We'd left at lunchtime to go to Cornwall, but got turned back at Newport.

Despite a taxi driver calling on the radio, it seemed that no-one wanted to risk blowing up their diesel engines by attempting to go out to Ocle Pychard, where we live

And who can blame them - it is their livelihood!

Then one brave man turned up.

He'd been working 13 hours already, but was willing to give it a go.

With our hearts in our mouths we managed eventually to get into Ocle village, where we were still a mile and a half from home.

Then a lovely neighbour with a 4x4 drove us the last bit, despite the water lapping at the doorstep of her house!

So thanks be to goodness and our kind, brave rescuers, we were home safe.

What I want desperately to know is - did our taxi driver get home all right himself?

Please could you thank him for rescuing us - he was wonderful!

I know it's a little story in the middle of much greater ones - but I would like him to know we are extremely grateful to him.

Nominate your hero or heroine from the July floods - someone who went out of their way to help someone in trouble.
