You have the chance to get hand on with history at an archaeological dig at The Commandery in Worcester in the six weeks from Tuesday 20 June. This is the second of two large archaeological digs in the grounds of this historic building - which is currently being refurbished. Visitors have the option to tour the archaeological site, learning from the on-site experts and exploring the history of their ancestors first-hand, or to get their hands dirty and get actively involved in unearthing Worcester’s hidden past. Budding archaeologists can book in to assist with the dig at any time during that six week period, but are advised to book in for a five day period in order to get the most out of their experience. Julian Richards, presenter of BBC2’s Meet The Ancestors, will be on hand on Saturday 22 & Sunday 23 July to answer burning historical questions and guide the diggers in the right direction. The Commandery’s archaeological excavation is part of a £1.4 million Heritage Lottery Project to renovate and revitalise this nationally significant heritage site. The building has been at the heart of the city of Worcester for nearly 2000 years- it has been a monastic hospital, a stately Tudor home, Royalist Headquarters for the Civil War, a Georgian home and centre for enterprising small businesses, a Victorian school for the Blind, and a 20th Century home and printworks. |
