Phantom facts

  • This silent version of the classic horror was made in 1925
  • It starred Lon Chaney as the phantom
  • the film was later reissued in 1930, with added on talking sequences and new orchestral score.

The 1925 black and white film of The Phantom of the Opera is an acknowledged classic - and where better to see it than Hereford cathedral with a spooky accompaniment on the world famous Willis organ.

The soundtrack will be improvised live by the celebrated organist, David Briggs, making his return to the cathedral.

"This will certainly be something that no one has seen or heard before in Hereford Cathedral," said Geraint Bowen, director of music.

"‘David is a master of the cathedral's world-famous Willis organ and an evening like this will attract a whole new audience to watch this classic movie with some wonderful music."

David spent three years in Hereford in the 1980s as assistant organist to Dr Roy Massey before moving on to the positions of organist at Truro and Gloucester Cathedrals.

During this time he built up a distinguished career as an exciting performer, particularly renowned for his skill as an improviser, and he now entertains audiences the world over.

"We have had the most wonderful support during the summer programme," said Geraint Bowen, "and I know that The Phantom of the Opera will be a truly amazing end to the series. David will have the entire audience on the edge of their seats!"
