BBC H&W listeners pledge over £9,000 for tsunami survivors

BBC Hereford and Worcester listeners have pledged over NINE THOUSAND POUNDS to the Tsunami Appeal….after presenter Dave Bradley agreed to have his moustache shaved off.

It all started on New Year's Eve when ' Bradders' got frustrated with himself as he had done nothing to help the appeal.

A listener phoned in and offered a donation to Mandi Harris who was manning the phones, if Dave had his moustache cut off.

This started the ball rolling with over a thousand pounds on that first day.

On the Sunday Morning Show the appeal was launched again and another FIVE THOUSAND pounds was pledged by listeners, just to see the hair disappear from Dave's top lip. And on Monday, pledges for a further THREE THOUSAND were made, totalling OVER NINE THOUSAND in all.

Many listeners have told Radio Hereford and Worcester that they wanted to give, but couldn’t find a way to do it, and when they heard where the money was going were happy to send in to Dave and Mandi, who is helping to co-ordinate everything.

The donation will go to buy Shelter Boxes that go out to the disaster areas that contain just about everything for a group of ten people to survive until permanent help reaches them.

The survival kits include a massive tent, water purification equipment, food, lighting, tools and a whole host of survival equipment.

They are put together by the Helston Rotary Club and already over 500 have been flown to the affected area.

Brian Neville-Lea from the Rotary Club Of Worcester South and his members are helping to get the boxes out to the disaster areas, and came on the Bradders Sunday Show to explain where the money will go.

The boxes cost almost £500 each, this means that another 18 boxes are on their way thanks to the generosity of our listeners.

Bradders is planning to remove the moustache on Friday evening at Sixways when Worcester Warriors play host to Leeonesa in a European Shield game.

Donations are still being taken: call 0845 300 8181 for details, or drop into our receptions in Hereford or in Worcester from Tuesday 4th January onwards.
