The Family

Southampton five-piece The Family are out to prove that country is cool with their raucous new sound. Check out the interview and four great live tracks broadcast on BBC South:Live.

In spring 2005 The Family gathered out of the ashes of Southampton retro psychedelic rockers the Jupiter Few. Their new musical direction couldn't have been more different.

The addition of a pedal steel guitar and piano player simply known as Hag gave the band a firm Americana/old country vibe.

"We don't feel like were doing it as part of a revival - we'd just do it anyway - glad to hear there is a revival!" Aiden and Brad told Phil Jackson.

The Family have recently recorded with The Bees in their Isle of Wight studio after they bumped into each other at various festivals - there is also talk of playing a few gigs together.

The band have picked up some rave reviews during their time together including from Penny Lane of NME who said: "The Family sound unbelievably polished for an unsigned band, with deeply instrumental, layered tracks."

You can listen to four tracks from their South:Live session and their interview with Phil Jackson by clicking the audio links above.

If you're in a band from Hampshire or the Isle of Wight and would like to be considered for the show simply send in your CD together with a completed South:Live Entry Form and keep your fingers crossed!
