The collection tells the story of the King's battle against invaders; the transformation of his army into an effective force, his drive for England's cultural progress and his generosity and legacy.

Many precious artefacts will be on show including seven aestels (ornate pointers used to follow text). It will be the first time in history these jewelled objects have been displayed together.

One of the most important pieces in the exhibition is the Alfred Jewel. An aestal made of gold, enamel and rock crystal which has the lettering 'Aelfred mec heht gewyrcan' or 'Alfred ordered me to be made' around its edge.

The famous jewel is on loan from the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and will be at the exhibition for the first six weeks.

The unique collection also features many iconic objects from the King's reign including original manuscripts, Viking weapons and hoards, Anglo-Saxon jewellery, coins and ceramics.

Alfred the Great reigned from AD 871 to 899 and was buried in Hyde Abbey in Winchester. Hyde Abbey later became a prison - Alfred's tomb was broken up and his bones scattered during clearance work by the prisoners.

Alfred the Great: Warfare, Wealth + Wisdom, 2 February - 27 April 2008, The Gallery, Winchester Discovery Centre Tickets can be bought through the Theatre Royal Box Office, 01962 840440 or online.
